The Dewar Dragon varsity football team improved their current winning streak to 18 games this past Friday with a convincing 69-22 win over the Strother Yellowjackets.
The mercy-rule victory came in the third non-district contest for the defending Class B state champions in 2021.
The Dragons were not originally scheduled to battle Strother this season, but the Yellowjackets stepped up and took the place of the Hollis Tigers, who had to cancel their Week 3 meeting with Dewar for an unknown reason.
The convincing win over Strother moves the Dragons to 3-0 on the year. The Dewar squad will look to continue their winning ways this Friday at home against the Foyil Panthers.
Friday’s non-district game with Foyil is set to get underway at 7 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar.
In last Friday’s non-district battle with Strother, the Dewar defense came away with a total of six takeaways against the Yellowjackets, recovering four fumbles and hauling in two interceptions - returning two of the takeaways for scores.
The Dragons did most of their scoring in the first quarter, erupting for 41 points in the first 12 minutes of action.
Jameson Ross began the Dewar scoring in the opening frame, scampering 20 yards to paydirt for the first Dragon touchdown of the contest. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the home team the early 6-0 advantage.

The host Yellowjackets found their way onto the scoreboard for the first time in the contest in the opening frame, scoring on an 8-yard run. The try for two was no good, making it a 35-6 margin for the visiting Dragons.
Nevin Corbin put the finishing touches on Dewar’s 41-point first-quarter total with a 10-yard run late in the stanza. The Dragons were unable to reach the end zone on the conversion attempt to take a commanding 41-6 lead into the second frame.
The second quarter scoring started with the Dewar defense finding the end zone, as Brownfield returned an interception 70 yards to paydirt. The try for two was successful, extending the Dragons margin to 49-6.

Strother put any chances of the game ending at halftime with a 4-yard TD run near the end of the second quarter. The Yellowjackets were also successful on the conversion attempt to make it a 55-14 Dewar lead at the intermission.
