October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Many people immediately ask, “Why do so many battered people stay?” The reality is that many try to leave repeatedly; however, leaving does not guarantee safety. The most dangerous time in a domestic violence relationship is often after a person leaves, due to the batterer’s loss of control. Statistically, survivors of domestic violence will leave several times before being able to permanently separate from an abuser, often frustrating their only support system. Awareness of the cycle of domestic violence is key in helping victims to break the cycle of violence.
