“Take a Bite Out of Crime” ... many that grew up in the 1980s and 1990s would be familiar with the phrase and the character “McGruff the Crime Dog.” McGruff was created thanks to a nationwide crime fighting campaign through the FBI to help children do their part in “taking a bite out of crime.” On Wednesday, the original “McGruff,” Winston Cavendish, stopped by the Okmulgee Police Department and the Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s Office to visit with officers as part of a new nationwide tour bringing McGruff back on the scene to reignite crime prevention as well as the need for citizens, especially children, to be comfortable speaking up when they see crime happening around them.
