The Okmulgee Cemetery was awash with flags in recognition of Memorial Day. On Friday, veterans, members of the American Legion and VFW posts, Boy Scout Troop 102, and Elks Lodge assisted in placing flags at the cemetery marking the graves of fallen veterans. At the Okmulgee County Courthouse, crosses were placed in front of the County Veterans monument located on the northwest corner of the lawn. On Monday, the community was welcomed by American Legion Commander Richard Raby. Chaplain George LeGrand gave the prayer, and Pearl Thomas sang the National Anthem in the Creek language. The guest speaker was LTC Bill Lester (Retired) giving a quick overview of the origins of Memorial Day, and the number of those who lost their lives in the various wars. The Last Roll Call was given by Cassandra Northington and George LeGrand ringing the bell for each name of fallen veterans. Wreaths were placed on the Veterans Memorial, followed by a firing of volleys by the Post 10 Honor Guard. Richard Simons, a member of Taps of Veterans, closed with a playing of Taps for those in attendance. PATRICK FORD
