The Dunbar All-School Association is gearing up for another year of service and has begun holding meetings again.
Meetings are held at the former Banneker Kindergarten Building located at 417 E. 2nd. The group met last week, and this was first meeting in two years since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
At the September meeting, community events were planned and discussed, with ideas such as monthly family meal gatherings where members of the community can come and bring their families out for a warm home cooked meal and community connection.
Other ideas included a community Bazaar where vendors can set up booths and sell their wares; a children’s craft program and an evening of board games to name a few.
There are also plans in the making for Santa’s Helpers to provide childcare for a few hours during the Christmas shopping season.
The community is invited to a musical hosted by the Association on Nov. 5. More details will be forthcoming.
The Dunbar All-School Association was recognized as a 501c3 organization in 1993, but was created sometime before then. The desire was to keep the Dunbar Tiger Pride alive.
Dunbar High School was a part of the three separate schools, including Attucks Elementary and Banneker. Preserving memories and their history, the Banneker school building is home to several of the school’s memorabilia.
Attucks and Banneker are the only two historical school buildings left in Okmulgee and restoring those schools back to their former glory is a high priority.
The Dunbar All-School Association is open to and looking for more community involvement and ideas to make these buildings available for use and continued historic preservation for generations to come.
The next meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 22 at the Banneker School building.
