The months of December and January are traditionally more difficult to get programs for the Okmulgee Lions Club because of the holidays, and everybody is busy and donât want to be bothered by us. Such was the case Tuesday - no one wanted to be the program. Kinda reminds me of the lyrics of an Oak Ridge Boys song, which says: âNobody wants to play rhythm guitar behind Jesus. Everybody wants to be the lead singer in the band.â So, what do you do? Just like football - you drop back ten yards and punt!

Enter the three D’s - President Dan Anderson, Dean Craig, and Duaine Janzen to discuss/plan upcoming events. Now all you poker players, draw to that pair and a spare! February is the month for Valentine’s Day and the Sweetheart Banquet to honor our sweethearts for allowing us time away from home for meetings and projects. Rumor has it that some of our spouses strongly encourage some of us to strive for perfect attendance, and my name was definitely “in the hat.” Christmas is over, ain’t no reason to draw names now, is there? We have not had a banquet the past several years because of COVID, and it looks likely that we will miss another year or so.
February 4 is the District 3-E (East) Convention in Bartlesville, and February 18 is the District 3-NW (Northwest) Convention in Fairview, and March 3 & 4 is the District 3-SW (Southwest) Convention in Chickasha. The State Convention will be held at St. Crispin’s Conference Center, Wewoka, on April 14 & 15, with Lions International President Brian Sheehan (Bird Island, Minnesota) as the Headline Speaker.
March will be our semi-annual Pancake Day, and the date will be firmed up at Monday’s Board Meeting. May will be the election of officers, and also the awarding of a scholarship for an Okmulgee High School graduate boy and girl. The Lions also give a $100 cash award to the Outstanding Senior boy, and the Rotary Club gives a $100 cash award to the Outstanding Senior Girl.
We are looking forward to an exciting year, but since Lion Raymond Kennedy has moved to Stillwater, we are in need of a song leader, so if you possess vocal qualities, you might could be the lead singer in the band.
