The shepherd-sheep metaphor offers you and me a firm picture of what “abiding in Christ” looks like. Good-Shepherd Jesus initiates the relationship (“I have come to seek and to save that which was lost”). He graciously takes it further along beyond the immediate rescue operation. Christ brings a sweet and lasting closeness from which may spring something that much resembles in its own way a well-tended and flourishing garden.
