Okmulgee High School student Brooklyn Scott was honored Wednesday by the VFW District 7 and Post 1189 commander. Brooklyn was the local winner of the Voice of Democracy (VOD) Essay Contest, which qualified her for the District competition. She placed second in that competition and was presented a check for $300 and a letter from the mayor of McAlester. Aaron Smith, District Commander for Veterans of Foreign Wars Area 7, was joined by Connie Dickinson, District Auxiliary President; and Guy Duckworth, VFW Post 1189 Okmulgee Commander. The VOD Essay is a nationwide scholarship made available to students. The winner of the National competition wins a $35,000 scholarship. The state winner will advance to the National competition.
