Karl Fredrich Koening was a tank gunner in Africa with the 21st Panzer Division of the German Army. After his unit was captured and detained in several African POW camps, an American Victory ship carried them to the U.S., where they were imprisoned until the end of the war. One of the locations he remembers fondly was a short stint of working on the Watson Ranch in northeast of Morris. The former POW returned recently for a visit to the ranch. The WWII survivor recalls freedom he felt while riding horses.
