OCHS is a non-profit organization currently officed in the Okmulgee City Animal Shelter. We provide a service to feed and water the animals. We clean and sanitize bowls, we clean and sanitize kennels and litter boxes. We do the laundry of all the towels and blankets. Many mornings we only have one person on staff, as such it’s impossible to answer the phone while we are taking care of the shelter animals. The more animals there are in the city shelter the more time it takes to properly care for them. OSUIT PAWS Volunteers have been very instrumental in helping us clean and walk dogs. Still, while we are in the back we lock the front door for our own safety. We apologize for your missed calls and for the times we have been unable to receive you in the lobby. We do return calls to those we feel we can serve and make appointments for our missed visitors wanting to give donations or to meet animals in shelter.

Once an animal lands in city shelter, we take pictures and post them on our OCHS FB page in an attempt to locate their owner. Our followers’ shares help to spread the word. An owner has 72 hours to claim. To claim an animal, the owner must go through the City Animal Control Officer. An owner can call OCHS to see if their animal is in shelter, but only the city ACO can release back to an owner. If an animal is not claimed within the 72 hours, OCHS has an additional 14 days to place the animal with a rescue, foster or adopter. During these 14 days, OCHS has the dogs heartworm tested, weighed, assessed, and provide a Rabies Vaccination for those we feel are adoptable. Cats receive a combo test to ensure they are healthy to go into a home. That’s a total of 17 days an animal can stay in the city shelter. Those 17 days go fast for OCHS and isn’t much time to find placement. As you can imagine, those 17 days and nights are long for an animal to live in a kennel with limited human contact. We strive to get them out ASAP.
For animals saved from shelter by a foster we work on getting that animal adopted. We create a profile on our website and post to our FB page. We also hold periodic adoption events to find forever homes for those in foster homes and boarding.
OCHS cannot bring animals into the city animal shelter. We do not pick up animals from homes or off the streets. We cannot accept animals that are brought into our office. All incoming animals must go through the City Animal Control office.
To claim an animal or to report a stray please call the City ACO at 918-756-3511. To save an animal from shelter, follow OCHS on Facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/okmulgee and submit an application on our website: https://www.okmulgeehumane. org/.
