Schulter Fire Department (SFD) is led by Chief Claude Stanke, who has been in firefighting for just over 50 years.
There are approximately 12 volunteers, with nine full-time members.
SFD covers 25 square miles and provides mutual aid assists with surrounding departments.
In 2023, the department responded to 47 calls. This year, they have had two so far.
As with most small rural fire departments, grants are essential and have been used to get new personnel gear, along with obtaining and upgrading their current equipment.
Due to their rural coverage area, the agency must transport water to fire scenes. Besides having a 2,300 gallon water storage tank at the headquarters, trucks are equipped with 600, 500 and 400 gallon tanks. The department also recently acquired a 2011 grass truck, along with an ATV that also carries a 40 gallon tank for those hard to reach areas.
