Verna Jean Moore was born on May 19, 1946, in Okmulgee to Robert, Sr. and Samantha Jefferson. She was one of eleven children. On March 30, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones, this sweet angel was chosen to go home and be with the Lord.
Verna Jean (Jefferson) Moore was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She attended Dunbar School and later received her G.E.D. Verna Jean accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age at Macedonia Baptist Church and later begin attending Mt. Zion Baptist Church before her health began to fail.
Verna Jean found great joy in cooking at the early age of eight. She took great pleasure in cooking for her 10 siblings and several of their friends. Verna became such a great cook in her younger years that she began working at Bishop’s in downtown Okmulgee. She eventually became a Dietician at Okmulgee Memorial Hospital, where she worked for more than 35 years before retiring.
Verna Jean was well known around town for her tasty cakes and pies. She affectionately often teased family members who tried to copy her secret recipes that she had perfected over 60 years! Any given day you could catch Verna Jean spending time with family and friends, baking pies and cakes, and cooking dinner for her family.
Verna was preceded in death by her father and mother, Robert Sr. and Samantha Jefferson; brothers Robert (Bob) Jefferson, Alfred Jefferson, Roy Jefferson, Clyde Jefferson; and one sister, Rosie (Jefferson) Talton.
Verna leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Demetrice Moore (Harold) of Okmulgee, Marlo (Robert, Sr.) Redricks of Tulsa, and one son, Michael (Melody) Bird of Jenks; a special niece whom she raised as her own daughter Candace (Dannie Jr.) Byington of Okmulgee; siblings, Charles Jefferson, Robert (Mary-Ann) Jefferson of Okmulgee, Harold (Nikki) Jefferson of Tulsa, OK, Darlene Matthews and Kathy Tarkington (Hardy) of Okmulgee; loving grandchildren, Kelian (Kimberly) Miller of Moore, Devin Bird of Oklahoma City, Trevor (Kora) Bird, Keaton Bird of Okmulgee, Samantha Redricks, Robert Redricks III of Tulsa; her last living aunts and uncle on her mother’s side, Johnny (Rae-Ann) Wilson, Velma Hall, and Mildred Wilson of Okmulgee; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
