Lots of activities are planned for this weekend, including the fourth annual Black Historic 5th Street Community Gathering.
This year’s event kicks off on Saturday at 10 a.m. and is a celebration of local heritage and communal unity, according to promoter Tonya Bowie.
It coincides with the Roy LeBlanc Okmulgee Invitational Rodeo, celebrating 69 years. It will be Aug. 9-10, at the Bob Arrington Arena at the Claude Cox Omniplex. Attendees on Saturday are being asked to wear white as anticipation builds for the 70th anniversary of the longest running Black rodeo returns.
However in the heart of downtown 5th Street will be bustling with activities, including various food and retail merchants, the Robert Rentie Car Show, a Bucking Bull, and a kids’ zone by Clearview Baptist Church.
There are numerous vendors coming from Muskogee, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
“Some are new faces, while others are beloved regulars,” Bowie stated. “We’re excited about the diverse range of offerings this year.” — Schedule of Events
