Natural disasters can produce devastating impacts which can last for months, if not years. To prepare for and mitigate future losses, communities rely on Hazard Mitigation Plans because they identify specific risks and vulnerabilities as well as preparedness activities that can make your area more resilient to natural hazards.
— City of Okmulgee: Hazard Mitigation Survey We need your input – the city is currently in the process of updating their Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) which will be submitted to FEMA for approval in the Fall of 2024. Hazard mitigation planning reduces the loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with local jurisdictions, such as your town or school district, identifying natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying these risks, HMPs develop longterm strategies for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation Plans are the key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. The survey and the responses you provide will help planners develop a comprehensive assessment of how natural hazards impact your community.
