The overcrowded facility, holding 323 inmates instead of its 226 capacity, was cited as a contributing factor to the unrest.

An Okmulgee school bus was involved in a minor accident when the driver ran into a ditch on S. Mission. No injuries were reported among the driver, an adult aide and two students on board. Police Chief Leo Willey confirmed that the bus was traveling at 22 mph in a 35 mph zone and avoided a large oncoming truck. The bus was later pulled from the ditch and driven away without any damage or citations issued.
Chris Friehofer, a 1981 Okmulgee High School graduate, returned to perform in “Much Ado About Nothing” on Oct. 9-10. The performances were held at the Okmulgee High School Auditorium, marking Friehofer’s first performance in Okmulgee since 1981. The play was part of the pilot production for Synchronicity Theatre Company, which also performed at Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City. Friehofer expressed excitement about returning to his hometown for these special performances.
