Doris M. Barber was born on August 31, 1939, in Okmulgee to parents Earnest and Gladys Adams. Her parents preceded her in death.
She departed this life on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. She had an exciting and wonderful life. She loved to cook, especially sweets. She made sure the sick and shut-in had a meal and whoever stopped by, there was plenty of food to go around which gave her great pleasure.
She worked at Okmulgee Colored Nursing Home and Miami Terrace Nursing Home, where she managed and dispensed medications. All of the patients whom she served were given exemplary care. After ending her nursing career after 25 plus years, she brought her two aunts home to live with her.
After ending her nursing career, Barber Daycare Center was born and Doris along with her late husband Melvin Barber and three other workers operated this facility. They provided immaculate care and two full-course meals were served to all of her children. One thing that set them apart from any other day care facilities was that Doris’s husband would pick up the mothers, and take them to work/school and bring the children to daycare. When it was time for them to get off, she would send the mother a plate, and Melvin would pick them up and take them home. At Christmas, there were as many gifts under the tree for her daycare children.
Holidays were very special to her, she wanted all of her kids to come home. She would bake her special sweet potato pie and August 31, 1939 – November 5, 2024
homemade rolls that everyone loved.
Doris is preceded in death by her daughter, Theresa Ann Barber; her siblings, Mary Ann Adams, DeWayne Adams and Earnest Adams, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter Vanessa (Robert) Miller, her daughter Diane (Charles) Jordan, her daughter Janet Marie Barber of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren, David (Shannon) Wilson, Tyrone L. (Tiffany) Harris, Terry L. Barber, Cameron Williamson, Whitney Williams; twelve great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
