According to a statement released by Acting Superintendent LuVona Copeland, the district was alerted to a concerning image that appeared to show a student posing with a firearm in a school bathroom.
“As a precautionary measure, Okmulgee High School was placed on a temporary lockdown after authorities were made aware of a concerning photo,” Co- peland said. The district team immediately contacted law enforcement, and both Okmulgee Police and Muscogee Lighthorse Police responded swiftly.
Law enforcement quickly located the student in question, who was taken into custody without incident. Officers then conducted a thorough search of the school campus. No weapon was found, and investigators later confirmed the photo had been taken on a different day.
Despite the outcome, district officials said the decision to initiate lockdown procedures was the right call given the nature of the report.
“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority,” Copeland said. “We appreciate the prompt response from law enforcement and the cooperation of our students and staff during this situation.”
Parents and community members were also thanked for their patience and continued support. District officials emphasized that safety protocols and communication systems worked as intended, allowing the situation to be handled quickly and calmly.
